Siena

Siena, Italy - Ayla Boswell

Siena is one of those cities where travelers go explore for a day when they are in the region. This is because it’s a smaller town with less to do than its neighbor Florence. During the Summer, it brings in many visitors when they host the famous Palio horserace that takes place in Piazza del Campo.

When I first arrived, I went on a walking tour for a few hours. If you would like to see what tours are offered in Siena, you can click here. They offer a variety of different tours from walking tours, wine tasting tours, and full day tours to multiple small towns in the area. I really enjoyed all the history and information provided from my tour. Definitely don’t skip on doing a little research and learning about Siena. It’s not only beautiful but has an interesting history.

Fonte Gaia

Many people were hanging out in Piazza del Campo, but especially around the Fonte Gaia. It was built in Medieval Times to bring fresh drinking water to the town. It is now fenced off but there were two small drinking fountains on both sides where people were filling up their water bottles. It can get very hot in summer, so it’s a good place to stop by not only for the fountain but a drink of water.

Duomo di Siena

We didn’t go inside the Siena Cathedral, but after looking at photos online, I wish we had. The interior is gorgeous just like the outside. I think it would be worth paying the entrance fee.

After the tour, we were given the rest of the day to walk around and get some food. Spending a day strolling the streets is a great way to immerse yourself in this medieval tuscan town. The day we were there, there was a chocolate festival happening in the Piazza del Campo which was a wonderful treat. If you want to learn what other events are happening soon in Siena, click here.
